Personal Information

I was born in Switzerland in 1964 and moved to Boston in 1993. My daytime job: to study the pharmacological properties and regional distribution of hormone receptors in the brain (sounds impressive, doesnit!). The techniques I use in my laboratory rely heavily on photography (click here for an example of images I get with this very particular way of looking at the human body). While I was a Ph.D. student (years ago!) in Switzerland, I started to use black and white films for a more personal purpose. During the last 12 years, I have been doing a lot of people/street photography, including photo-journalistic work published in ... Japanese newspapers. I suppose that if my job was not about documenting reality and describing the human body as objectively as possible, my photography would be essentially photojournalistic. But for the time being, I have chosen to remain a medical researcher and I want photography to give me a break from the purely descriptive world. That is why I have started to focus on the study of abstract nudes, which seems to give me more freedom to "create". (This picture is the oldest one on my site. It was shot while I was living in France in the early 90's, at a time where I was struggling to define the respective roles of science and photography in my life). In the last few years, I have attended workshops with Connie Imboden and Karin Rosenthal. While I studied the technical aspects of photography exclusively in books and magazines, I cannot describe how much more important the teaching of these 2 artists has been for me.

In the summer, I work essentially outdoors, often in the water, photographing both underwater and above the water. I like to play with reflections and refraction, which transform the bodies to a point where they are hardly recognizable as such. When it is getting too cold for outdoor photography, I am using the small studio I have set up in my apartment. I have been trying, more or less successfully, to use silver coated mylar to mimic the effect of water. In the last few months, I have also been exploring the nude in movement, using tungsten light with or without open flash, keeping the shutter open for 4-10 seconds and following the model's movement with the camera.
